Making
a Difference for Your Child
--Dr. Margaret Munsey,
NUCCA Doctor of Chiropractic Children
are often found to be especially responsive to upper cervical care.
Misalignments in children generally heal in even fewer treatments
than with adults. Muscle and
ligamentous tissues are especially resilient; thus the child’s body
heals quickly. A child
benefits from being in alignment during their growing years for the rest
of his or her life. Commonly,
adult patients begin as upper cervical patients with physical complaints
that are due to an injury experienced long ago as a child. Examples of spinal injuries experienced in childhood can
include: falling down hard on one’s tailbone or head, being yanked
forcefully on the arm by another child, trauma experienced during
childbirth, automobile accidents, and athletic injuries.
A child will often appear to bounce back quickly from spinal
injuries, and chronic symptoms will not often occur until later in life.
If one’s body has been compensating for spinal misalignment for
most of one’s life, the healing will be a more extensive process, as the
body has designed itself around that injury, and movement patterns and
balance cues must be re-learned. Catching
a misalignment early on requires only a simple spinal check, is easily
treated, and pays off in one’s health for the rest of one’s life. We
encourage all children to come in to be checked for spinal alignment.
When indicated by a spinal screening, receiving upper cervical care
at a young age can prevent physical problems throughout the rest of
one’s lifetime. A balanced spine allows the nervous system to function at its maximum potential. This, in turn, creates improved efficiency in all the body’s systems, affecting the immune system, balance, coordination, digestion, sleep patterns, and overall health and well being. Parents of children who receive upper cervical care report that their children get flus and colds less often than they did prior to becoming patients.
While treatment for general health maintenance is invaluable, there are specific children's health conditions that are treated effectively with upper cervical care. Examples of these include ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), infantile colic, nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting), and chronic otitis media (recurrent ear infections). If you would like to read up on a particular condition, case studies on upper cervical treatment for these conditions can be found in The Occipito-Atlanto-Axial Subluxation Complex: a Review of the Scientific Literature, by Kirk Eriksen, D.C. There is a copy available in our waiting room. Because
we want to help children grow up healthy and do all we can to ensure
optimal health throughout the rest of their lives, we are offering a
family plan. Prices are
discounted for children. Call
our office for details on the breakdown of fees for each age group.
Because check-ups are an integral part of maintaining spinal
balance, we encourage them in all our patients.
When both a parent and their child (17 and under) have appointments
on the same day, children receive check-up appointments at no charge. Call
us if you have any questions about your child’s care. We’d love to talk with you!
